WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Rep. Grace Meng (D-NY), during National Police Week, introduced legislation to ensure that death benefits paid to the families of law enforcement officers killed in the line-of-duty are tax-free.
Last year, the Don't Tax Our Fallen Public Safety Heroes Act was signed into law in order to guarantee that death benefits paid by states to law enforcement officers' families were non-taxable. The problem is that "local government" payments were inadvertently left out of the bill when it was passed by Congress.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Reps. Grace Meng (D-NY) and Tom Emmer (R-MN) have reintroduced the Grant Residency for Additional Doctors (GRAD) Act of 2017, legislation that would direct the State Department to streamline the visa approval process for international physicians who are scheduled to work at hospitals in the United States, many of them in rural and underserved areas that face severe doctor shortages.
Currently, foreign physicians scheduled to serve their residencies at American hospitals are encountering extremely long delays in obtaining J-1 visas from U.S.

"I applaud the creation of an Asian Pacific American Legislative Caucus and I thank Speaker Heastie and Assemblymembers Ron Kim and Yuh-Line Niou for their work in launching it," said Meng. "When I served in Albany, there were not enough members to form such a caucus since I was the only Asian American in the entire state legislature.

QUEENS, NY – U.S. Rep. Grace Meng (D-Queens) this afternoon sent a letter to the head of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to demand answers about why agents entered P.S. 58 in Maspeth, Queens in search of information pertaining to a fourth-grade student.
"As the mother of two public school students here in Queens, one of which is also in the fourth-grade, I remain deeply concerned about USCIS agents showing up to P.S. 58," said Congresswoman Meng.

Federal lawmakers from New York and California reintroduced legislation Thursday calling on the Postal Service to issue a stamp that honors the Chinese workers who built the transcontinental railroad nearly 150 years ago.
U.S. Reps. Grace Meng (D-NY) and Ed Royce (R-CA) brought their resolution to the House the same week a golden spike was driven in 1869 in Promontory, Utah, which marked the completion of the rail link that joined the east and west coasts.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Rep. Grace Meng (D-NY), a member of the House Appropriations Committee's Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies, questioned John Thompson, Director of the U.S. Census Bureau, on how the Bureau will address language and translation needs in the 2020 census.
"It is important that the U.S. Census Bureau take steps to close the language access gaps faced by Asian American and Pacific Islander communities," said Meng.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Rep. Grace Meng (D-Queens) announced today, during Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, that she has obtained more than a quarter-million dollars for the Smithsonian's Asian Pacific American Center (APAC).
Meng secured the funds in the Omnibus spending bill, the legislation that funds the government through the end of September. The measure passed the House this afternoon and is expected to be approved by the Senate and signed into law by the President.
