Several provisions authored by U.S. Rep. Grace Meng (D-NY) that aim to assist veterans were signed into law this afternoon by President Obama.

Meng’s provisions – part of the Military Construction and Veterans Affairs Appropriations legislation – were attached to the stop-gap spending bill that the President signed to avert a government shutdown. Her measures include:

The House of Representatives passed legislation sponsored by U.S. Reps. Grace Meng (D-NY) and Elise Stefanik (R-NY) that seeks to combat flood damage caused by ice jams.

The measure, an amendment to the Water Resources Development Act (H.R. 5303), would allow the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to pursue new projects and technologies that prevent and mitigate flood damages associated with ice jams.

U.S. Rep. Grace Meng (D-NY), a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee and its Subcommittee on Asia, issued the following statement on Sunday’s terrorist attack against an Indian army base which resulted in the deaths of 18 Indian troops.

“I condemn Sunday’s attack on the army base in Kashmir and hope those behind this deadly assault on Indian troops are apprehended and brought to justice. I send my thoughts and prayers to the victims and families, and all who have been impacted by this unacceptable and heinous violence."

As the owner of Hess-Miller Funeral Home in Middle Village, Anthony Martino has arranged thousands of funerals. “When people say what do you do? [I say], we help people,” explained Martino. In the last 8 years Martino has “helped” more than 150 veterans who either have no way to pay for funeral services or no family. “He makes it easy for us. He provides the hearse, he provides the casket,” said Michael O’Kane, the President of the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter in Queens.

U.S. Rep. Grace Meng (D-Queens) announced today that Fang Wong of Flushing, Queens – an Army veteran and former National Commander of the American Legion – has been appointed to the Advisory Committee on Minority Veterans. The panel, which consists of veterans who represent respective minority groups, provides the U.S. Secretary of Veterans Affairs and Congress with critical advice and recommendations about benefits, medical care, programs and services for America’s 4.7 million minority veterans.
