Meng to Hold Kids Safety Day for Queens Parents and Children

September 14, 2015

On Sunday, September 20, U.S. Rep. Grace Meng (D-Queens), a founder and Co-Chair of the Congressional Kids Safety Caucus, will host Kids Safety Day for children and parents in Queens.

The event, set to take place from noon to 4 p.m. at Frank D. O'Connor Playground in Elmhurst, is designed to make families more aware of the many dangers that threaten children, and reduce the number of kids that are put in harm's way each year. The playground is located at Broadway and Woodside Avenue, across from Elmhurst Hospital Center.

"Each year, way too many children are injured and even killed in traffic collisions, bike crashes, poisonings, drownings, fires and other types of accidents," said Meng. "Most of these injuries and deaths are easily avoidable, and this important event will provide key tips and information on how to prevent them from occurring, and it will do it in an interactive, fun and educational way. I strongly encourage Queens families to attend."

Kids Safety Day will consist of numerous safety stations, interactive activities, demonstrations, educational materials and other valuable information on the following topics:

  • Child wellness
  • Street, road and bike safety
  • Fire safety
  • School safety including anti-bullying initiatives
  • Water and pool safety
  • Protecting children from abduction
  • Pedestrian and passenger safety
  • Household, chemical and medicine safety
  • Anti-drinking and driving campaign
  • Self-defense safety including Kung Fu demonstrations

The event will also include free handouts, prizes and other giveaways.

Organizations taking part include:

  • Queens Safe Kids Coalition led by North Shore-LIJ Health System
  • Elmhurst Hospital Center
  • New York Mets

Meng, who has championed legislation to protect kids and families, is among the few Members of Congress with young children. Those attending Kids Safety Day can also learn more about her work as Caucus Co-Chair and her federal initiatives to keep children safe.
