Meng Statement on Vote to Impeach President Trump for Incitement of Insurrection
WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Rep. Grace Meng (D-NY) today issued the following statement after voting to impeach President Trump.
"With Donald Trump refusing to resign and Vice President Pence failing to invoke the 25th Amendment, the House had no choice but to move forward with impeaching the President.
As I said last week, President Trump is a danger to our nation. He violated his oath of office and is unstable and unfit to serve as President. He incited a violent insurrection against our democracy, unleashing an angry and vicious mob of rioters who desecrated the People's House and sought to harm Members of Congress and the Vice President. It was an attack that the executive branch of government orchestrated against the legislative branch. Blood was spilled and people died – all because the President wanted to hold onto his power – at any cost. And since the attack on the Capitol, the President has been entirely void of any remorse for his role in fomenting violence. In fact, he even celebrated the insurrectionists, calling them ‘great patriots.' We have a responsibility to make sure that this President is prevented from doing any further damage to our country in the remaining seven days left in his term.
The President must be held accountable for fueling a seditious assault on the U.S. Capitol, and failing to take steps to stop the violence. He is a vital threat to our country and our Constitution. For the good and safety of our nation, and to defend our democracy, it is imperative that President Trump is removed from office at once and barred from holding public office in the future. The Senate must now act expeditiously."
