Meng Statement on Renewal of Zadroga Bill

December 19, 2015

U.S. Rep. Grace Meng (D-Queens) today issued the following statement on the permanent renewal of the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act:

"Permanently extending the Zadroga Act is a major win for first responders. Passing this renewal was a tough fight that should have never taken this long. Forcing first responders to travel to Washington to lobby for the measure was outrageous. But I'm thrilled that that we've finally crossed the finish line.

On September 11th, our brave first responders answered the call, and now, 14 years after that horrible day, we must not turn our backs on the tireless heroes who were sickened or injured while working at Ground Zero. Continuing to provide the medical care they need is the right and decent thing to do, and it's what must be done for all the sacrifices they've made for our country. Letting Congress abandon them was not an option.

I thank everybody who took part in this fight and all who never gave up; all the first responders, survivors, advocates, union officials and all my colleagues in government. Thank you!"
