Meng Statement on Biden Nomination of Katherine Tai as U.S. Trade Representative
WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Rep. Grace Meng (D-Queens), first Vice-Chair of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus, issued the following statement after reports emerged that President-elect Biden has chosen House Ways and Means Committee Chief Counsel Katherine Tai as the United States Trade Representative. This position is at the cabinet level and serves the president as the chief advisor, negotiator and spokesperson on trade issues.
“I’m very pleased to learn this evening that President-elect Biden will nominate Katherine Tai as our nation’s chief trade representative. I have been pushing the incoming administration to include Asian Americans in its search for top-level positions. Katherine is a dedicated and respected public servant who has years of experience on trade issues. She is an exceptional choice. If confirmed, she’ll also be the first woman of color to lead this critical office. Tonight’s announcement is a good step toward ensuring our community is represented at the highest levels of government. I congratulate Ms. Tai on her nomination and look forward to her continued public service.”
