Agriculture Subcommittee is critical to combating food insecurity particularly during COVID-19, promoting medical product and food safety, and overseeing the USDA and FDA; State and Foreign Operations panel is essential to advancing U.S. foreign policy
WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Rep. Grace Meng (D-Queens), a member of the powerful House Appropriations Committee, announced today that she has secured a seat on the panel’s Subcommittee on Agriculture, and has been selected as the Vice Chair of the Appropriations Subcommittee on State and Foreign Operations.
The Appropriations Committee is in charge of funding every federal agency, program, and project within the United States government, and the Agriculture Subcommittee has jurisdiction over the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Food and Drug Administration (FDA), domestic and international food programs, critical nutrition assistance for children, women, and other vulnerable communities, and food safety and production systems, among other initiatives.
The Subcommittee on State and Foreign Operations oversees United States foreign aid and development assistance, and sets funding levels for the State Department and U.S. foreign operations.
“I am honored to have been chosen to serve on the Agriculture Subcommittee,” said Meng. “I’m excited to expand the work I’ve done on issues critical to Queens, New York, and the nation such as improving food safety, protecting children from harmful foods, combating food insecurity, and enhancing critical initiatives such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) and other child nutrition programs. Food insecurity has always been an issue, but, as I saw early on when my district in Queens and New York City was the epicenter of this pandemic, COVID-19 further heightened and intensified the gaps in nutrition assistance. Strengthening our food programs will be all the more critical in our fight against the coronavirus where so many families throughout our city, state, and country have struggled to keep food on the table. No one should ever go hungry! I am also honored and humbled to have been selected as the new Vice Chair of the State and Foreign Operations Subcommittee. I’m excited to help lead this crucial panel in the new Congress where I will work tirelessly to rebuild America’s global leadership, fight for human rights, advance the fight against COVID-19, combat climate change, strengthen national security, and bring improvements to many other areas that are important to people in Queens and across the nation.”
In addition to the Subcommittees on Agriculture, and State and Foreign Operations, Meng will continue to serve on the Appropriations Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, Science and Related Agencies which determines the budget for the U.S. Department of Commerce, Department of Justice, FBI, and the nation’s science policies and programs, including addressing climate change.
Meng has been a member of the Appropriations Committee – and its Subcommittees on State and Foreign Operations, and Commerce, Justice, Science and Related Agencies – since 2017.
