Meng: Postal Service Plans to Renew Lease for Fresh Meadows Post Office

February 26, 2016

U.S. Rep. Grace Meng (D-Queens) announced today that the United States Postal Service intends to renew its lease for the U.S. Post Office in Fresh Meadows, Queens.

In a letter, the agency informed Meng that officials plan to renew the lease – which expires on April 30, 2018 – unless something unexpected occurs prior to the expiration date that might impact operations.

Earlier this month, Meng asked the Postal Service about the future of the facility after members of the community expressed concern that the lease may not be renewed.

“Plans by the Postal Service to renew the lease for the Fresh Meadows Post Office is welcome news,” said Meng. “Area residents made it clear that they do not want to lose this facility. It provides important postal services at a convenient location, and has served the neighborhood well for many years. I thank the Postal Service for its speedy response.”

“The residents of Fresh Meadows and the surrounding areas are extremely grateful for Congresswoman Meng's support and efforts to renew the Fresh Meadows Post Office lease when it expires in 2018,” said James Gallagher Jr., President of the Fresh Meadows Homeowners Civic Association. “It is essential that the Post Office remains at its current location which is convenient to the area’s seniors and all who reside in the community.”

“The Fresh Meadows Post Office has been an integral part of the Fresh Meadows community since it first opened,” said Maria DeInnocentiis, Area 6 Chair for Community Board 8 which encompasses Fresh Meadows. “It is second to the main office in Flushing and meets our needs for mail, packages and retrieving certified mail. It is an institution that needs to be retained and I thank USPS for keeping it in the community.”

The Fresh Meadows Post Office is located at 193-04 Horace Harding Expressway.
