Meng Marks Anniversary of Sikh Temple Shooting
August 5, 2013
U.S. Rep. Grace Meng (D-NY) today issued the following statement marking the one year anniversary of the Sikh temple shooting in Oak Creek, Wisconsin:
"A year after the senseless shooting at the Sikh Temple in Oak Creek, Wisconsin, we remember those who lost their lives in this horrible and tragic attack.
Despite the peaceful values of the Sikhism, many in the Sikh community continue to be victims of hate. This is outrageous and unacceptable, and as a nation, we must continue to rise-up and condemn these heinous acts of intolerance.
It is my hope that the FBI’s decision to track hate crimes against Sikh-Americans and other groups will help put an end the disgraceful discrimination of religious and ethnic minorities that sadly continues to exist in our country.
As we continue our fight against hate, and move forward with our push to enact tougher gun safety laws, we once again send our thoughts and prayers to the victims and their families, as well as the entire Sikh community."
