Meng Issues Statement on the 69th Anniversary of Israel's Independence Day, Yom Ha'atzmaut

May 2, 2017
WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Rep. Grace Meng (D-NY) today issued the following statement on the 69th anniversary of Israel's Independence Day, Yom Ha'atzmaut:
"Today, on Yom Ha'atzmaut, we celebrate 69 years of Israeli independence and statehood. From the very beginning, the United States and Israel have had a strong partnership based on shared ideals, a commitment to democracy, and a desire for peace. Israel continues to amaze me with its achievements in the sciences, breakthroughs in technology, and expertise in disaster relief that is used to help countries around the world. I'm proud to support Israel as a member of the Democratic Israel Working Group, and to represent so many hardworking and industrious Israeli Americans in Queens.
Throughout its history, Israel has faced, and to this day continues to face, threats to its very existence. We must not lose sight of Israel's security concerns, which is why as a member of the House Appropriations Committee, I was proud to request robust funding for U.S.-Israel defense cooperation programs including Iron Dome and David's Sling. Even as we celebrate Israeli independence, we must continue to be vigilant and renew our own commitment to guaranteeing the safety and security of Israel."
