Meng Issues Statement on One-Year Anniversary of Shelby Decision
June 25, 2014
U.S. Rep. Grace Meng (D-Queens) today issued the following statement on the one-year anniversary of the Supreme Court's Shelby County v. Holder decision, which removed critical voter protections.
"For 48 years, the Voting Rights Act (VRA) was an essential part of voting rights protections in America. This changed last year, when the Supreme Court removed crucial provisions that protected all Americans' right to vote, setting back decades of progress.
Although our nation continues to reel from this misguided decision, we must not let up in our efforts to fight against discriminatory voting practices.
It is essential that Congress revamp the VRA to ensure that no American is denied access to the ballot box. I am proud to cosponsor the Voting Rights Amendment Act, and I join my colleagues to call on House leadership to follow the Senate's example, and hold hearings on this very important piece of legislation."
