Meng Invites High School Students from Queens to Participate in New Congressional STEM Competition

March 25, 2014

Winning entry to be featured on House of Representatives’ website and displayed in U.S. Capitol

U.S. Rep. Grace Meng (D-Queens) today invited high school students from Queens to participate in the first annual Congressional Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) contest entitled “The House STEM App Challenge.”
Established by Members of the House of Representatives late last year, the new competition is a nationwide contest in which students compete by creating and exhibiting an “app,” for mobile, tablet or computer devices on a platform of their choice.
“This new competition is an outstanding way to engage students’ creativity, and encourage their participation in the growing STEM education fields,” said Meng. “It’s also an terrific way to make the rest of the country aware of the exceptional STEM talent that exists right here in our great borough. I encourage all local high school students to participate.”
Students who wish to enter the contest or obtain additional information should log onto Meng’s website at https://meng.house.gov/services/stem-competition. Students taking part in the competition are required to provide a YouTube video demo explaining their app. All entries must be original in concept, design and execution.
All the submitted apps will be judged by an appointed panel of individuals within the academic, STEM and entrepreneurial fields. The winning app in each participating Congressional district will be featured on the U.S. House of Representatives’ website (www.house.gov), and displayed in a special U.S. Capitol exhibit in Washington, D.C.
The deadline to enter the competition is April 30.
