Meng Hails Move to Address Airplane Noise Over Queens

March 24, 2014
U.S. Rep. Grace Meng (D-Queens) hailed Governor Cuomo’s announcement today that he’s moving forward with directing the Port Authority to address airplane noise over Queens.
Last November, Meng, along with Rep. Steve Israel (D-NY) and Senators Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) announced that their work to form an airplane noise community roundtable paid off when Cuomo instructed the Port Authority to form this roundtable and conduct noise studies. The representatives and senators sent a letter last July, signed by a total of 12 Members of Congress, requesting the formation of a roundtable to address “the ongoing and future concerns of our constituents in the Metro Area.” They also sent a letter last year calling for an increase in noise monitors.
“I am thrilled that our efforts to establish an airport advisory committee and install more noise monitors are finally moving forward,” said Meng “When airplane noise increased over the borough, we created our own noise about the need for these critical initiatives, and I am proud to have helped lead the initial conversation about them. By responding to the concerns that we raised, the governor has moved us further down the road in our community’s fight against airport-related issues that impact the quality of life in Queens. Although we are happy to deliver this victory to borough residents, more work still needs to be done such as soundproofing schools and ensuring that the FAA conducts environmental studies for future flight patterns. Though we are making progress, we will continue to keep up the fight!”
In his announcement, the governor said that the Port Authority would among other things:
  • Commence community roundtables with FAA officials and community representatives in April for JFK and LaGuardia airports
  • Hire an experienced aircraft noise consulting firm to assist with studying the affect of noise in communities surrounding the two airports
  • Be committed to doubling the existing portable noise monitors collecting data over flight paths for JFK and LaGuardia.
