Meng Encourages High School Students In Her District to Enter Congressional Art Contest; Congresswoman Announces Deadline Approaching Soon
Winning student to have artwork displayed in U.S. Capitol
QUEENS, NY – U.S. Rep. Grace Meng (D-Queens) announced today that the deadline is approaching for high school students in her district to enter her annual congressional district art contest with the last date for submissions scheduled for Monday, May 1.
Meng’s contest, which consists of entries from students who are constituents, is part of “An Artistic Discovery,” which is the national art contest held each year by the House of Representatives to showcase the artwork of all congressional district art contest winners from across the nation.
The winning artwork of Meng’s competition – along with the winning pieces from art contests in congressional districts throughout the United States – will be displayed for one year in the halls of the U.S. Capitol for all to see including visitors to Washington, D.C., House Members, Senators and maybe even the President. All of the winners will also be invited to a special reception on Capitol Hill to showcase the work of young artists.
The winner of Meng’s contest will be announced in Queens during a reception that the Congresswoman will host for students and their families, art teachers, principals and school administrators.
“Each year, I look forward to seeing the great artwork that local students enter into my contest and I’m already excited to see what will be submitted this year,” said Meng. “We are fortunate to have many young talented artists in communities I represent, and as the deadline nears, I encourage students in my district to highlight their artistic and creative abilities by participating in the competition. I wish all who enter the best of luck.”
The contest is open to all high school students attending school or living in Meng’s Sixth Congressional District.
The judges of the competition will consist of outside individuals. Entries must be two-dimensional and no larger than 26 inches high, 26 inches wide and 4 inches deep. Accepted mediums include paintings, drawings, collages, prints, mixed media, computer-generated art and photographs. They must also not violate U.S. copyright laws. Submissions should be dropped off at Meng’s Northeast Queens office at 40-13 159th Street in Flushing.
The Artistic Discovery contest was launched in 1982 for Members of Congress to highlight the artistic work of high school students from around the nation. Since it began, hundreds of thousands of high school students from throughout the United States have participated in the competition.
