Meng Blasts Revised Farm Bill
July 10, 2013
U.S. Rep. Grace Meng (D-NY) tonight blasted the Republican leadership in the House for planning to hold a vote on a revised farm bill Thursday that strips all funding for the vital Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP).
“After the original farm bill was defeated last month, I applauded the House for throwing it in the trash, and that’s where this revised measure belongs as well,” said Meng. “This new farm bill is unacceptable. It stabs in the back the most vulnerable people in our society, millions of whom depend on these vital programs to put food on the table. This includes the poor, the elderly and children.”
“I support the agricultural industry and will continue to do so,” Meng added. “But I will not vote for a draconian bill that does not fund food stamps and fails to address our nation’s agriculture policy in the proper way. I urge all my colleagues to vote no.”
The House defeated the Farm Bill on June 20th by a vote of 195-234.
