Meng blasts Cambodia authorities for violently suppressing factory workers

May 30, 2013
U.S. Rep. Grace Meng (D-Queens), a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee, today blasted authorities in Cambodia for violently suppressing protesting factory workers, including a pregnant woman who allegedly lost her baby after she was stunned with a cattle prod.

According to reports, the woman was one of approximately 3000 workers protesting low pay outside their factory in the Kampong Speu province. At least 23 other protesters were injured as well. The facility manufactures products for Nike.
“The excessive use of force used by authorities in Cambodia is outrageous and I strongly condemn their actions,” said Meng. “Cambodian authorities must respect the right of workers to voice their grievances, and their effort to violently suppress peaceful demonstrators is disgraceful. Those responsible must be held accountable. This appalling behavior must not be tolerated.”
Reports say the unidentified woman was two months pregnant, and that she was pushed to the ground before she was stunned.
Protestors are reportedly seeking $14 a month to help pay for transportation, rent and health costs on top of their $74 wage.
Meng also called on Nike to address the concerns of the workers, and to be responsive to their needs.
