Meng applauds recommendation for FBI to track hate crimes against Sikh, Hindu, and Arab Americans
June 7, 2013
U.S. Rep. Grace Meng (D-NY) today applauded the FBI’s advisory policy board for voting to recommend that hate crimes targeted at Sikh, Hindu and Arab Americans be tracked with their own categories in the agency’s uniform crime reporting program.
“I applaud this decision by the FBI’s policy board,” said Meng, “This move is a huge step in the right direction, and it would greatly boost our efforts to better track and combat hate crimes. I thank Congressman Joe Crowley and the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC) for their leadership in moving this initiative forward. I urge FBI Director Robert Mueller to implement this recommendation as soon as possible.”
Meng joined her colleagues in signing on to the letter to the FBI’s advisory policy board that called for separate tracking of hate crimes against Sikh, Hindu and Arab Americans. The correspondence was spearheaded by Crowley.
