Meng Applauds European Union for Designating Hezbollah as a Terrorist Organization
July 23, 2013
U.S. Rep. Grace Meng (D-Queens), a member of the Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on the Middle East and North Africa, today applauded the decision by the European Union (EU) to designate Hezbollah as a terrorist organization.
Rep. Meng, a freshman, has repeatedly raised this issue with European governments in the past several months. Just last week, she coauthored a letter pressing for European action against Hezbollah. The other coauthors of the letter were veteran Reps. Henry Waxman (D-CA), Ranking Member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee; Sander Levin (D-MI), Ranking Member of the House Ways and Means Committee; and Ted Deutch (D-FL), Ranking Member of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on the Middle East and North Africa.
“I commend the EU for adding Hezbollah to its list of terrorist organizations,” said Meng. “This is a very important and positive step that will impair Hezbollah’s operations. It sends a clear message that Europe will not stand for Hezbollah’s cowardly acts of terror. I thank the EU for making this bold move, and I urge EU officials to now include the political wing of Hezbollah on the list of terrorist organizations as well.”
The United States and Israel previously designated Hezbollah as a terrorist organization.
