Meng and Kim Honor Korea on Centennial Anniversary of its Independence Movement

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Reps. Grace Meng (D-NY) and Andy Kim (D-NJ) today introduced a resolution in the House of Representatives to commemorate the centennial anniversary of Korea's independence movement.
On March 1st, 1919, the Korean Declaration of Independence was read in Seoul that outlined the desires of the Korean people to enjoy liberty, pursue happiness, and develop as its own sovereign entity. The declaration was modeled after President Woodrow Wilson's Fourteen Points—a blueprint to world peace that included the right of a people to self-determination. It included contributions from several prominent Koreans who were educated and resided in the United States.
"I'm honored to introduce this resolution on the 100th anniversary of Korea's March First Movement – a monumental moment that continues to inspire Korea to work toward peace and prosperity on the peninsula," said Congresswoman Meng. "I also want to highlight the inspiring role of the young heroine Yu Gwan-sun who became the face of the March First Movement. Today, South Korea has transformed into a vibrant democracy and a critical ally and friend of the United States. Our alliance of shared values are further strengthened by the millions of Korean Americans and Koreans who call the United States home – many of whom reside in my district in Queens. I will continue to support efforts that strengthen U.S.-South Korea ties."
