Meng Issues Statement on Vandalism of Headstones at Cypress Hills Cemetery which Included Anti-Asian Graffiti
Aug 16, 2017
QUEENS, NY – U.S. Rep. Grace Meng (D-NY) today issued the following statement on the vandalism of headstones at Cypress Hills Cemetery which included anti-Asian graffiti.
“I am disgusted and horrified by the anti-Asian vandalism that took place early yesterday morning at Cypress Hills Cemetery, which is located partly in my district in Glendale, Queens. Headstones were knocked over, burial vaults were attacked, and anti-Asian graffiti was smeared over the desecrated graves. This is absolutely unacceptable, and I thank the hardworking officers of the NYPD who are investigating the vandalism as a hate crime, and I hope the perpetrators are found swiftly and brought to justice.
I fear that the current political climate in which neo-Nazis are not properly condemned by the president is emboldening those with hate in their hearts to commit egregious acts of vandalism and violence. We must all come together and speak out against these acts of hatred. This is not a partisan issue—this is an American one.”
